Get My Good Side Please

May 11, 2012

My husband and I travel – A LOT!  While getting photos of the two of us together as we travel is easier with advances in self-portrait features of digital cameras, often we still rely on the generous nature of strangers to capture our moment for us.

However, several years ago, my husband John and I were in Paris.  After some feet-tiring hours at the Louvre, we were relaxing by the courtyard fountain when a new tradition in our travel photography was born.  Yes, we take photos of our feet.

Since then, we’ve taken a number of such pictures and I think there are some big plusses.  First, you can easily take it yourself so if you are off the beaten path, you can still document your moment.

Most of us are not self-conscious about our feet in the way we might be about, say, our hips…

If there are multiple people in the shot, you don’t have to be concerned with getting everyone to smile or if their eyes are open.

Shoes on or shoes off it’s an interesting way to tell a story.  Imagine dirty hiking boots in the view you climbed up to see…toes buried in white sand of a well deserved getaway or even just small feet playing in a mud puddle.

I had not given much thought to our quirky feet photos.  In truth, at times they were a way to show where I was without showing too much…sweaty, dirty, no makeup or even worse – in a swimsuit!

So imagine my surprise when the June issue of Readers Digest arrived and there was a brief article on – you guessed it – feet photos!  Seems a photographer named Tom Robinson began documenting his travels with his wife this way back in 2005.  He now has a collection of over 90 such photos, 3 of which can be found on page 88 of the June Readers Digest!

We also have a number of photos of our shadows.  This one shows both our shadow, and our footprints in the snow, from a hike near Cave B in Washington State.

The back cover photo on our holiday card was the shadow of us on our tandem bicycle.

For the back cover of our Shutterfly photo album from our 11th “honeymoon” trip to the Dominican Republic last July, we used a photo of our footprints in the sand.  It’s a wonderful reminder that we are on this journey together.

Photos are an important part of your travel as well as your everyday life.  Get creative and have some fun.  Even the most camera shy in your group may enjoy posing for a “foot photo”!
